Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has once again stirred controversy — this time with a jaw-dropping comment that’s leaving fans furious and questioning where his priorities really lie.
In a recent Wall Street Journal interview about his energy investments, Jones said:
“There’s $100 billion present value with gas out there. That’s why I’m talking to you on the telephone rather than trying to fix our defense with the Dallas Cowboys.”
Yes — he actually said that.
The remark immediately went viral across social media, where fans and analysts alike blasted Jones for appearing to prioritize business profits over football success. Many called it tone-deaf, especially as the Cowboys’ defense has struggled in key matchups this season.
One fan on X summed up the outrage bluntly:
“$100 billion in gas? Cool. But how about spending a little of that to stop somebody on third down?”
Others accused Jones of being out of touch with the team’s championship drought, which now spans nearly three decades since the Cowboys’ last Super Bowl win in 1996.
Sports talk shows wasted no time jumping on the quote, with ESPN’s analysts calling it “vintage Jerry” — a mix of business bravado and football indifference. Former players were less forgiving, saying Jones’ comments highlight a larger problem: a billionaire more focused on deals than defense.
Despite the backlash, Jones appeared unbothered, later doubling down on his comment by saying he’s “always balancing priorities.” Insiders close to the team, however, suggest the remark may not sit well with defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer — or the Cowboys locker room.
As one longtime Dallas reporter put it:
