🔥 “He’s Ready…” — Dave Roberts Unexpectedly Speaks About Dalton Rushing, Revealing the Dodgers’ Secret Card for the 2026 Season.P1

“Dalton Rushing isn’t a distant project anymore,” the Dodgers manager said, pausing just long enough for the weight of the statement to sink in. In that brief moment, it felt less like a routine assessment and more like a signal flare — one pointing directly toward the Dodgers’ future.

The organization that has mastered the art of planning years ahead may already be shaping its post-2025 identity. And suddenly, Dalton Rushing is no longer a name reserved for prospect rankings and minor-league box scores. He is being spoken about as something far more dangerous: a real option.

In modern baseball, having a quality catcher is one of the most valuable — and rare — assets an organization can possess. The Dodgers already sit in an enviable position. Will Smith, the backbone of their pitching staff and one of the game’s most consistent offensive catchers, is under contract through 2033 after signing a 10-year, $140 million extension last season. Stability, leadership, production — all accounted for.

And yet, Rushing remains very much in the picture.

Catching is arguably the most demanding position in baseball, mentally, technically, and physically. Catchers are expected to block balls in the dirt, frame pitches at the margins, control the running game, absorb foul tips, and still manage the psychological chess match that unfolds between pitcher and hitter every night. Add offensive expectations on top of that, and it’s no surprise that elite catchers are worth their weight in gold.

What often goes unseen, however, is the mental leap required when a catcher moves from the minors to the majors. Game-planning, sequencing, reading swings, adjusting on the fly — it’s a learning curve that humbles even the most gifted prospects.

According to the Dodgers, this is precisely where Rushing has taken meaningful steps forward.

“He’s handled it pretty well,” bench coach Danny Lehmann told The L.A. Times, via Jack Harris. “I think he’s been exposed to some things that he wasn’t in the minor leagues that he’s appreciative of. The game-planning, the speed of the game — that’s always going to be a learning curve. I think he’s really working on that.”

Those words matter. The Dodgers do not hand out praise lightly, especially when it comes to catchers. They are meticulous, demanding, and famously patient. When they believe a player is starting to see the game differently, it’s often the final barrier before opportunity appears.

Ranked as the Dodgers’ No. 2 prospect entering the 2025 season, Rushing is still viewed internally as a catcher — despite Smith’s long-term grip on the position. That distinction is crucial. It signals belief, not just in his bat, but in his ability to handle the most complex role on the field.

At the same time, the Dodgers have quietly broadened Rushing’s defensive résumé. As he climbed the farm system, he logged innings at first base and left field. When he reached Triple-A Oklahoma City late last season, he played exclusively in left field — a move that raised eyebrows, but also hinted at flexibility rather than displacement.

Behind the scenes, the Dodgers made another telling decision. They parted ways with longtime backup Austin Barnes, a respected clubhouse presence, and refocused Rushing’s development squarely on catching. It was a subtle but meaningful shift — one that suggested change was coming, even if the timeline remained unclear.

There was a moment in 2024 when Rushing’s MLB debut felt possible. It didn’t happen. For many prospects, that kind of near-miss can linger. For Rushing, it became fuel.

Instead of frustration, he chose patience. Instead of pressing, he worked.

That approach hasn’t gone unnoticed.

Dodgers Believe Dalton Rushing Developed As Catcher

Now, as the Dodgers balance a championship window with long-term sustainability, Rushing’s name keeps resurfacing in internal conversations. Not as insurance. Not as trade bait. But as a developing piece who could alter roster construction in ways that aren’t obvious yet.

Smith remains the present. There is no question about that. But baseball seasons rarely unfold exactly as planned. Injuries happen. Roles evolve. Opportunities appear when preparation meets timing.

And the Dodgers, perhaps more than any organization in the sport, thrive in those moments.

Roberts didn’t say Dalton Rushing would debut tomorrow. He didn’t promise a role. He didn’t offer guarantees. He simply delivered a line that felt intentionally incomplete.

“He’s ready…”

Not today.
Maybe not even this year.

But somewhere between now and 2026, the Dodgers’ quiet contingency plan may stop being a secret — and start being a solution.
