Rob Gronkowski Plans To Retire With New England Patriots

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — It wasn’t just another ceremony. It was a homecoming, a farewell, and a love letter all wrapped into one unforgettable moment. On Wednesday, Rob Gronkowski officially returned to Gillette Stadium to sign a one-day contract with the New England Patriots, ensuring that his Hall of Fame career would begin and end in the same place — the franchise where his legend was born.

“I’m a New England Patriot. I’m a Patriot for life,” Gronkowski said, his voice cracking slightly. “My career started here — it 100% needed to end here. It was an absolute no-brainer.”

What fans didn’t know was that this wasn’t just about football. Gronkowski revealed that his decision was inspired by the final wish of his late friend, Susan Hurley, who had always wanted to see him retire as a Patriot. That emotional motivation added another layer of meaning to a day already steeped in nostalgia.

But it wouldn’t be a Gronk moment without some laughter. During the ceremony, Patriots owner Robert Kraft jokingly asked, “Since we’re playing the Jets tomorrow night, how about a two-day contract?” Without hesitation, Gronk grinned and fired back, “What’s the signing bonus?” — sending the crowd and his former teammates into laughter.

Beneath the humor, though, was a sense of completion. Gronkowski’s nine seasons with the Patriots (2010–2018) produced three Super Bowl titles, five Pro Bowl appearances, and some of the most dominant performances ever seen from a tight end. After a brief return to the NFL with Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he added a fourth Super Bowl ring, Gronk finally felt it was time to close the chapter — on his own terms.

“This place made me who I am,” he said. “The fans, my teammates, and this organization — they accepted me, embraced me, and let me be me. That means everything.”

To cap off his farewell, Gronk will ring the lighthouse bell before Thursday’s Patriots vs. Jets game and address the crowd at halftime.

In typical Gronk fashion, his goodbye was loud, funny, and full of heart — a perfect ending for the most joyful Patriot of them all.
