Advanced analytics suggest that aggressive fourth-down decisions could be the key to salvaging the Cowboys’ season. With a defense that can’t get stops, keeping the ball in Dak Prescott’s hands might be their best — and only — defense.
“You can’t keep giving the ball back if you know your defense won’t hold,” one NFC executive said. “At some point, you trust your offense to finish what it starts.”
Prescott has been quietly efficient, and the offense ranks in the top half of the league in third-down conversions. But McCarthy’s conservative play-calling on fourth downs has fans and analysts questioning whether Dallas is wasting opportunities — especially in close games.
