FRESNO, Calif. — It began as a simple backyard dream — a boy, a bat, and a heart full of hope. But this week, 10-year-old Devin-D Barrera is taking that dream to the biggest stage imaginable: the Major League Baseball “Pitch, Hit & Run” finals at the World Series in Toronto.
The Fresno native, who’s been swinging a bat since he was three, has officially earned an all-expenses-paid trip to represent California in the youth competition that showcases the best young players across North America. “My name is Devin-D… and I love baseball,” he said, his smile stretching wider than a ballpark under the lights.
But behind the young star’s confidence is a story as heartfelt as it is inspiring. His father, Javier Barrera, revealed the origin of Devin-D’s distinctive name — and how baseball has always been at the heart of it. “I wanted to call him Dodger,” Javier recalled, laughing. “But my wife said, ‘No, we’re not naming him after a dog.’ So, we settled on Devin — and kept the ‘D’ for Dodger. It’s perfect.”
It’s fitting, then, that Devin-D was born wearing a Dodgers onesie — and he’s been loyal to the team ever since. “I’ve been loving the Dodgers since I was born,” he said proudly.
For the Barrera family, baseball isn’t just a pastime — it’s a way of life. Weekends are spent at ballparks, practices, and tournaments. Devin-D, who now plays for the JV team at Baird Middle School and the Sun Devils travel team, has been training with his dad since he could barely hold a glove.
“Baseball is everything to him,” Javier said. “He’s tried to qualify for this competition for the last three years. He came up short every time, but this just shows — hard work really pays off.”
This year, that perseverance finally paid dividends. Devin-D outperformed hundreds of other competitors in pitching, hitting, and running — earning one of the top scores nationwide and securing his ticket to Toronto.
Now, he’s heading to the World Series, not as a fan in the stands, but as a competitor on the field. “I’m so excited,” he said. “I get to fly to Toronto to see the Blue Jays and the Dodgers. It’s going to be the best matchup ever.”
For Javier, watching his son step onto baseball’s grandest stage brings emotions that are hard to put into words. “It’s a dream come true,” he said, his voice softening. “Have you seen the price of World Series tickets? There’s no way we could’ve gone. For him to be part of it — it’s a dream for both of us.”
At just ten years old, Devin-D isn’t just chasing fly balls — he’s chasing something far greater: legacy, belief, and the joy of proving that dreams built in small towns can reach the biggest stages. “My ultimate goal,” he said, “is to be the number one shortstop in the state.”
For now, though, the boy who once swung a bat in the Fresno sun is about to take on the baseball world — one pitch, one hit, and one run at a time.
And somewhere in the stands, a proud father will be watching, whispering the same words he’s said since the very beginning: “Keep swinging, son. The world’s watching now.”
