HOUSTON – A big bang has just come from the top of the Houston Astros. Owner Jim Crane, who transformed “Space City” into a modern baseball empire, is considering a sentimental $2 million project: erecting a statue of the legendary José Cruz Sr. outside Minute Maid Park. If realized, it would be the first major monument to an Astros icon who has been with the team for four decades.
“José Cruz was more than just a player – he was the spirit of the Astros,” a source familiar with the matter said. “Every generation of Houston fans has known him, and this statue will ensure Cruz’s name lives on.”
Cruz, who played for the Astros from 1975 to 1987, was the heartbeat of the team during its lean years, racking up more than 1,900 hits and becoming one of the most beloved faces in club history. His number 25 has been retired, but this multi-million dollar monument project will elevate his legacy to new heights – a lasting symbol to unite generations of fans.
The Astros already have statues to honor Craig Biggio and Jeff Bagwell, but Cruz’s presence among the legendary ranks will cement him as the “spiritual father” of Houston baseball. Cruz still serves the team as a Community Outreach Executive, connecting the Astros with the community through a variety of volunteer activities.
The project, if green-lit, would not only be a $2 million art investment, but also a timeless tribute from Jim Crane and the Houston Astros to a man who dedicated his career – and his heart – to the team.
