At the G.M. Meetings in Las Vegas on Tuesday, Philadelphia Phillies President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski resurrected the entire trade season with a statement that silenced every news anchor in the room: “Harrison Bader knows we want to keep him… but they also want to see the market.”
Bader, 31, had a .796 OPS for the Phillies last season after being traded from the Minnesota Twins and then to Philadelphia. He’s shaping up to be one of the team’s big bets next season — but the question is: Is Bader really the long-term answer to center field? Dombrowski readily admitted: “They know we’re interested. They want to see what else is out there.”

Dombrowski is clearly sending the message: The Phillies aren’t just looking to keep familiar faces, they’re willing to restructure drastically. He admits that the team’s outfield “isn’t in great shape” given the 2025 outfield OPS of .710 — 19th out of 30 teams.
While Bader has the upside of being extremely defensive and fast, his desire to “read the market” means a short term and maximize value — opening the door for big deals like Kyle Tucker or Cody Bellinger.
It’s not just the Bader problem — Dombrowski has made it clear that they’re looking at a future with young players. Promising prospect Justin Crawford has been identified as having a “very strong chance” of starting next season, potentially changing the position of Bader and his outfield teammates. Other names like Nick Castellanos are being “scrutinized,” with the possibility of leaving not only due to poor performance but also because the roster structure is leaning toward younger players.

Dombrowski makes no bones about it: “It depends on what they want, and what we want.” With Bader, it’s clear: he had his best season in years, with the fastest hit rate of his career (40.3% hard-hit rate).
But the “risk” is still present: Before the 2025 season, Bader had only two full seasons with an OPS+ > 100 (2018, 2021). This makes the Phillies think harder about a long-term commitment.
With the entire executive group meeting in Las Vegas, every move the Phillies make is being watched more closely than ever. Bader could be a stepping stone to a “blockbuster” deal if the team chooses to make a drastic change. If he does, however, he will be the most important outfield player starting in 2026.

Dombrowski concludes: “We’re moving forward, not rebuilding. But the path we take will be different.”
The Phillies are at a crossroads: Will Bader stay and be the outfield icon for the new lineup, or will he be traded away to bring in a true star? The answer will be decided in the coming weeks — and every Philadelphia fan is biting their lip.
