Mac Jones of the New England Patriots and Tom Brady of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers talk after an NFL game

As the New England Patriots prepare to face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the first time since Tom Brady’s emotional return to Foxborough, rookie quarterback Drake Maye can’t help but think back to the night that defined his childhood memories of football greatness.

“I remember watching that game and just being in awe,” Maye said this week, recalling the 2021 Sunday Night Football showdown when Brady, then with Tampa Bay, edged out his former team in a 19–17 thriller. “You could feel how much that moment meant — to him, to the fans, to the whole sport.”

For Maye, who was still at North Carolina at the time, that game symbolized everything the Patriots once stood for: precision, resilience, and a quarterback who simply refused to lose. Now, as the new face of the franchise, Maye understands that comparisons to Brady are inevitable — even if he’s not trying to be the next TB12.

“Tom Brady’s the greatest ever,” Maye said. “You don’t replace someone like that. You just try to honor what he built here — and find your own way.”

The Patriots haven’t been the same since Brady’s departure, cycling through quarterbacks and struggling to find an offensive identity. But Maye, drafted third overall in 2024, represents renewed hope. His arm talent and leadership have impressed coaches, even amid growing pains that come with a rebuilding season.

As New England gets ready to host the Buccaneers again, the parallels are impossible to ignore. The last meeting was all about Brady’s legacy. This one could mark the start of Maye’s.

Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo acknowledged the emotional weight of the matchup. “It’s a full-circle moment for this organization,” Mayo said. “Tom gave us everything. But now, it’s Drake’s turn to write his story.”

For fans, Sunday’s game won’t just be about wins and losses — it’s about passing the torch. Brady built an era that defined two decades. Maye now faces the monumental task of beginning a new one.

“It’s surreal,” Maye admitted. “Growing up watching Brady dominate… and now, I’m wearing the same uniform. I just hope to make this city proud.”
