San Francisco 49ers fans can finally breathe a sigh of relief. The endless speculation about George Kittle’s injury-prone future, the thin depth chart at tight end, and the nagging question of who could ever replicate the All-Pro’s unique blend of blocking, speed, and playmaking ability? NFL Network draft guru Daniel Jeremiah has delivered the answer: Oregon Ducks standout Kenyon Sadiq.
In his latest mock draft projection, Jeremiah has the 49ers selecting the 6-foot-3, 245-pound tight end with the 27th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. And he isn’t mincing words about why Sadiq is the ideal fit in Kyle Shanahan’s offense.
“Sadiq could go much higher than 27th overall,” Jeremiah wrote. “He’s undersized [for a traditional in-line tight end], but he has outstanding speed and is a competitive blocker. He would be the ultimate chess piece for Kyle Shanahan, giving the coach a hybrid of George Kittle and Kyle Juszczyk.”
That hybrid description is exactly what makes Sadiq so tantalizing. He brings Kittle’s explosive athleticism in the passing game and Juszczyk’s physicality and versatility as a blocker and short-yardage weapon. In Shanahan’s creative scheme, a player who can line up inline, flex out to the slot, motion across the formation, or even line up in the backfield would unlock endless mismatches.
Sadiq proved he belongs among the elite tight ends in college football during the 2025 season. The Oregon star led all tight ends in touchdowns with 8, ranking fifth in receptions (51) and eighth in receiving yards (560). He also posted a strong yards-per-reception average of 11.0, showing he isn’t just a short-area chain-mover—he can stretch the field when asked. Pro Football Focus graded him as one of the top pass-catching tight ends in the country, and his performance earned him Big Ten Tight End of the Year honors along with first-team All-Big Ten recognition.
The timing couldn’t be better for San Francisco. Despite a season ravaged by injuries—Brandon Aiyuk missing the entire year, Ricky Pearsall out for eight games, Jauan Jennings sidelined for two, and Kittle missing six games—the 49ers still finished with the NFL’s fifth-best passing offense. Much of that success came from superstar running back Christian McCaffrey, who astonishingly led the team with 102 catches for 924 receiving yards. Depth pieces like late-addition Kendrick Bourne, suspension-returnee Demarcus Robinson, and undrafted backup Jake Tonges stepped up admirably.
But the tight end room remains a concern. Kittle, even when limited, remained a force: 57 receptions (second on the team), 628 yards (third), and 7 touchdowns (tied for third). Yet his season ended prematurely in the wild-card loss to the Philadelphia Eagles with a torn Achilles, adding to a long list of hamstring, ankle, and other ailments. The future Hall of Famer will turn 33 early in the 2026 season, and the wear and tear of his punishing style is becoming harder to ignore.
Tonges showed promise as a spot starter and situational player, but the 26-year-old undrafted free agent isn’t built to carry the TE1 load full-time. Enter Sadiq: a ready-made succession plan who could ease Kittle’s snaps, preserve his health, and potentially extend his career by one or two more productive seasons.
Adding Sadiq wouldn’t just be about replacing Kittle—it’s about elevating the entire offense. Shanahan already turns mismatches into touchdowns on a weekly basis. Giving him a fast, physical, versatile tight end who can block in-line, win downfield, and create after the catch would be a nightmare for defenses.
The 2026 offseason is shaping up to be a pivotal one for the 49ers. Free agency could bring another veteran receiver or depth tight end, but the draft appears to be where the franchise addresses the long-term future at the position. And if Jeremiah’s projection holds, the wait for Kittle’s heir is officially over.
