When fans began mocking a young Steelers rookie for “making NFL money” while his mother still lived in their old neighborhood, the cornerback didn’t snap back with attitude — he answered with quiet truth.

“They just sit back and judge,” he said. “But my mom never wanted to leave. She’s lived there her whole life. I could buy her a new house, but she still wants to stay. She hasn’t spent a single dollar I’ve sent — every bit of it, she’s saved.”

That rookie was Donte Kent, the Steelers’ seventh-round pick (No. 229 overall) out of Central Michigan, who signed a four-year, $4.04 million contract with a $140,000 signing bonus

fully guaranteed. He officially inked his deal on May 9, 2025, per Steelers Wire.

A former team captain at Central Michigan, Kent started 12 games in 202 tallying 45 tackles and earning praise for his versatility as both a slot and outside cornerback, as well as his ability to return punts.

Currently part of Pittsburgh’s

practice squad, Kent hasn’t yet played regular-season snaps but impressed during the preseason with his footwork, awareness, and maturity — earning quiet respect inside Mike Tomlin’s locker room.

Tomlin spoke highly of the rookie, saying,

“Donte’s the kind of player who’s about substance, not flash. He shows up, works, and respects the process. That’s what being a Steeler is all about.”

With competition tight behind veterans like

Beanie Bishop and Darius Slay, Kent’s patience and work ethic continue to define him. His rookie deal might not have big incentives, but his drive and character are priceless.

For fans in Pittsburgh, his words hit home — a reminder that success isn’t measured by houses or headlines, but by loyalty, humility, and never forgetting where you came from. 🖤💛
