TORONTO – In the hushed press room after a bitter Game 5 loss, Toronto Blue Jays coach John Schneider did not shy away from the cameras or make excuses. His voice hoarse with emotion, he spoke slowly, as if to address the entire city:

“If we lose a win, we can double or triple our efforts for the next game. But if we lose the trust of our fans, we lose the love that we can never get anywhere else. Toronto has given us everything — and now, it’s our turn to give back.”

The 6-3 loss to the Texas Rangers officially put the Blue Jays in a difficult position in the series, forcing them to win both remaining games if they want to continue their postseason journey. Many believe this was a fateful stumble, as the Jays’ bullpen collapsed again in the eighth inning — when they should have maintained a 3-2 lead.

John Schneider, who has been with the team for more than two decades, looked down at the reporters’ table, his hands clasped around the microphone.

“I take responsibility for this loss. When a team loses, the first person to answer is the coach. I’m not going to blame anyone – not the players, not the tactics, but myself. Because when they look at the training camp, they need to see someone who believes in them to the end.”

In the stands that night, many Jays fans still lingered, chanting Schneider’s name despite their disappointment. A banner was held high in the crowd: “We still believe.” – “We still believe.”

That statement, according to many, made the coach choke up with emotion. Because after a turbulent 2024 season, with a series of criticisms about Schneider’s rotation and use of the bullpen, it was not easy for the Blue Jays to maintain a spirit of unity.

Toronto is now preparing for Game 6 away from home, where they must win to send the series back to Rogers Centre. Kevin Gausman will start, according to the team update, while Bo Bichette is still uncertain to return after a minor wrist injury.

However, in Schneider’s eyes, the biggest concern isn’t performance or strategy — it’s belief.

“I know the fans are angry, they’re disappointed. But what hurts me the most isn’t losing, it’s thinking that maybe they won’t believe in us anymore. Because a team can rebuild the stadium, sign a big contract, but if they lose the love of the fans, there’s nothing left to fight for…”

Then he paused, eyes red, took a deep breath before ending the press conference with a sentence that left the room silent:

“We’re going to… no, we have to do something special for this city. And it starts tomorrow.”

On social media, thousands of fans re-shared that speech with the hashtag #ForToronto, as a commitment to accompany the team in the most difficult days.

Although the Blue Jays were on the verge of elimination, in that seemingly desperate moment — John Schneider rekindled the most important thing that winning cannot buy: true trust and love between the team and the fans.
