As the season entered its do-or-die phase in October, Javier Báez chose to express his feelings in a unique way: a touching letter titled “Dear Baseball” to the sport that has shaped his life.
“It may sound cheesy, but it’s true,” Javy began. He recalled his childhood in Bayamón, Puerto Rico, where baseball was more than just a game, it was a lifeline that kept him away from the temptations of the streets and kept him disciplined.
“Baseball helped me stay focused, disciplined, and on track,” Báez wrote. “It taught me how to love, how to fight, and how to get back up after a fall. In fact, baseball saved my life.”
More than just a game, baseball is the glue that holds the Báez family together. He recounts the difficult years when the family moved to Jacksonville to care for his sick brother, and how the ballpark was where the family found hope and connection.
From his first swings to his time in the Detroit Tigers, Javy’s journey is a testament to resilience. “You brought me to Detroit, the Motor City — where the fans are always there for the team, where every victory is celebrated like it’s sacred,” he writes.
Báez also thanked Tigers fans: “Thank you to the fans who have been there every day, cheering me on. You are the reason I keep fighting.”
October is approaching — the most intense time of the season. Báez closes the letter with a spirited message:
“We are in the final stretch. The roar of Comerica Park will be heard again. Baseball has given me so much… but the best is yet to come.”
For Báez, baseball was more than just a career — it was a friend, a teacher, a guide. His letter quickly went viral on social media, touching and inspiring thousands of fans.
With the Tigers in a tailspin, Javy’s message was more than nostalgia, it was a declaration of war: he and his teammates would fight hard for the fiery October days ahead.
