In an emotional twist, future Hall of Famer Justin Verlander is setting his sights back on the place where his career once flourished: the Houston Astros. According to sources from Bob Nightengale, the possibility of Verlander returning to Houston – where he won two Cy Young Awards, two World Series championships, and even spent spring training so close to his home in Jupiter, Florida – is hotter than ever.

At age 42, after finishing his one-year contract with the San Francisco Giants, Verlander is a self-made man. Despite a full season with the Giants, he still passionately believes he has “something to offer the world of baseball” – and Houston could be the place to wind down his career in the most romantic way.
In fact, Verlander has made it clear that he is “always open to considering” becoming an Astro again.
He and Astros owner Jim Crane reportedly had high-stakes conversations — but ultimately, the two sides never reached a deal. “I love this place,” Verlander said. “The opportunity to play here has always been in my mind.”

His time with the Astros from 2017 to 2022 was a highlight: Verlander was a mainstay at the top, contributing to two championship rings and some stellar individual seasons.
But when he returned in 2023 and 2024, the results were mixed. “Last season left a sour taste in my mouth,” Verlander admitted. “I hold myself to a high standard, and I know I can do better.”
The biggest motivation for returning to Houston may have been the “coming home” mentality: Minute Maid Park, his former teammates, and the special affection of Astros fans. Verlander said that returning to Houston—where he received standing ovations when leaving the field, even in tough games—left a deep mark on his heart.
The Astros, judging by their current energy, are also in dire need of pitching experience. MLB analysis suggests that the club is potentially losing a few homers, and Verlander—despite his age—could still bring value through experience, finishing, and reliability.
However, the history of tense negotiations cannot be ignored: Verlander admits that the two sides once had “mutual interests,” but financial or long-term planning issues have prevented a formal deal.

For example, recovering Astros fans are watching every move. A Verlander return would be more than just a professional one, but an emotional one: a legend eager to return to the home he grew up in, where he wrote his greatest history.
If this comes true, Justin Verlander will have turned his career around in the perfect way — a symbolic return to make one last mark, and for the Houston Falcons to sound one last time, as a long tribute to one of the greatest pitchers in history.
