ST. LOUIS — Baseball seems to have fallen silent in Darryl Strawberry’s heart as the MLB legend faces a fierce personal battle: his wife, Tracy, is in critical condition after undergoing multiple surgeries in her battle with cancer.
In an emotional Instagram post, Darryl wrote: “My heart has been heavy lately … and I’m heartbroken.”
He included photos of himself sitting by his wife’s hospital bed, placing his hands gently on her face, offering warmth and hope — but also revealing the extent of the pain he’s been carrying.
Tracy Strawberry, Darryl’s partner of nearly two decades, has undergone two major surgeries in quick succession: one to treat early-stage cancer and another to replace her hip.
But as Darryl reveals, the journey has not been smooth sailing — “a painful setback” has complicated things.
Darryl is not only a former Mets and Yankees star, but also a witness to a turbulent life — battling addiction, cancer, and finding faith.
Now, he is fighting again — this time at the bedside of his wife, whom he calls his greatest inspiration.
In a recent post, he wrote:
“Thank you to all the doctors and nurses who have shown so much love and dedication to care for my wife through these difficult times. Your compassion has meant so much to our family.”
Darryl also extended his heartfelt thanks to his church community, friends, and all those who have followed and prayed for their arduous journey: “Your support has been priceless,” he wrote.
Today, Page Parade reports, is a hopeful step forward: Tracy will be returning home after a stay in the hospital.
With a smile back on her face and a determined look in her eyes, she walked out of the hospital — a sign that she has not given up on her fight for her life.
But for Darryl, the worry is constant. As someone who has been through the dark times of addiction and illness, he knows all too well the value of every moment. “I can’t bear the thought of losing her… she’s a part of my soul,” he says.
The Darryl-Tracy duo are not only a symbol of resilience, but also a living testament to love forged through trials. From a football star to a pastoral leader, Darryl is now writing the most difficult, but perhaps most heartfelt, chapter of his life story.
