Toronto — A media and sports storm has just been whipped up: Four umpires have reportedly been temporarily suspended after MLB discovered questions in the series between the Tampa Bay Rays and Toronto Blue Jays — even as the results of the games remain unchanged for the time being.
According to early reports circulating, the series between the Rays and Blue Jays featured a number of “incredible” umpire decisions that could have affected the outcome of each game. Criticisms have focused on balls/strikes, on-base calls, and some controversial calls that are considered beyond the understanding of the general public and even experts.
MLB is said to have opened an investigation, and decided to suspend the four umpires who were on duty in this series, to review their qualifications, make a decision — whether there was a violation of professional rules or any unclear benefits — before responding to the fan community and the teams.
The public immediately exploded. Blue Jays fans were angry, Rays fans were skeptical about the impact on home field advantage. MLB commentators, former players, and analysts began to dissect each situation: “Could the umpire have been influenced outside of the game?” — the question was asked in many places.
