Lakers’ Biggest Problem Exposed: Why Los Angeles Must Add More Athletic Players After Rockets Disaster.C2

The Los Angeles Lakers may have just learned a brutal truth about their roster — and it could completely shape their future this offseason.

After a frustrating series loss to the Houston Rockets, one glaring weakness became impossible to ignore: the Lakers simply are not athletic enough to survive against younger, faster, and more physical NBA teams. While the spotlight naturally falls on stars like Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves, many analysts believe the real issue runs much deeper.

The modern NBA has evolved into a battle of versatility, speed, and defensive mobility. And right now, the Lakers are losing that battle.

One name unexpectedly emerging from recent discussions is Adou Thiero. Although Thiero played limited minutes, his athleticism, defensive energy, and ability to guard multiple positions immediately stood out. For many observers, he represents the exact type of player the Lakers desperately need more of moving forward.

The Rockets series exposed Los Angeles in uncomfortable ways.

Houston attacked relentlessly in transition, pressured the Lakers on the perimeter, and forced defenders into difficult matchups possession after possession. The Lakers struggled to keep up with the Rockets’ younger legs and physical intensity. Defensive rotations looked slow, closeouts came late, and opposing players repeatedly found open lanes to attack.

This wasn’t just about losing a playoff series.

It revealed a roster construction problem.

The Lakers currently have offensive firepower. Luka Dončić remains one of the most gifted offensive creators in basketball, while Austin Reaves continues developing into one of the league’s most reliable secondary scorers. However, playoff basketball demands far more than scoring talent alone.

Championship teams need athletic wings who can defend elite guards, switch across positions, crash the glass, and survive physically over long playoff runs. At the moment, the Lakers simply do not have enough players capable of consistently doing that at a high level.

That is why NBA analysts are now urging the franchise to aggressively target players who fit the “Adou Thiero archetype” — long, athletic, versatile defenders capable of disrupting opposing offenses.

The urgency becomes even greater when considering future playoff matchups.

If the Lakers hope to compete against elite Western Conference teams like the Oklahoma City Thunder, Denver Nuggets, or Minnesota Timberwolves, they must improve defensively on the perimeter. Teams led by explosive athletes and dynamic scorers will continue exposing slower lineups.

Against Oklahoma City specifically, the Lakers could face major problems containing players like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jalen Williams without stronger wing defenders. Athleticism is no longer optional in today’s NBA — it is survival.

Several names are already being floated as possible Lakers targets.

Herb Jones has become one of the most popular suggestions among fans and analysts. Known for his elite perimeter defense, length, and basketball IQ, Jones could instantly become one of the Lakers’ most impactful defenders. His ability to guard multiple positions would dramatically improve the team’s flexibility.

Trey Murphy is another intriguing option. Murphy combines athleticism with elite shooting, giving the Lakers both floor spacing and defensive versatility. In many ways, he fits perfectly alongside ball-dominant stars like Luka Dončić.

Then there is Andrew Wiggins, a player whose athletic profile and championship experience make him an attractive possibility. While inconsistent at times, Wiggins has already proven he can contribute to winning basketball at the highest level, especially defensively.

But the Lakers’ transformation may not stop with trades.

The upcoming NBA Draft could become a critical moment for the franchise. Analysts increasingly believe the Lakers should prioritize selecting athletic wings rather than focusing heavily on centers. The reasoning is simple: versatile wings have become the most valuable role players in modern basketball.

Big men remain important, but playoff series are increasingly decided by perimeter defense, transition play, and matchup versatility. The Lakers cannot afford to ignore that reality any longer.

The ideal vision for Los Angeles moving forward is becoming clear.

Build around Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves offensively while surrounding them with long, athletic defenders capable of handling the toughest assignments. That formula has already proven successful across the league.

Teams like Boston, Oklahoma City, and Minnesota thrive because they combine star power with relentless athleticism and defensive pressure. The Lakers must follow that blueprint if they truly want to contend for another championship.

There is also growing pressure from fans.

Many supporters believe the franchise has spent too much time chasing star names instead of building a balanced roster. The Rockets series only amplified those frustrations. Social media exploded with criticism about the Lakers’ lack of speed, energy, and physicality compared to younger teams.

Now, the front office enters one of its most important offseasons in years.

Every move will matter.

Whether through trades, free agency, or the NBA Draft, the Lakers must find athletes who can defend, run the floor, and bring toughness to the rotation. The margin for error in the Western Conference is becoming smaller every season.

Fortunately for Los Angeles, the foundation is still strong. Luka Dončić gives the franchise a legitimate superstar centerpiece, and Austin Reaves continues to improve rapidly. But without the right supporting cast, even elite talent may not be enough to survive the brutal reality of playoff basketball.

The message after the Rockets loss is now impossible to ignore.

The Lakers don’t just need more talent.

They need more athletes.

And if they fail to address that weakness this offseason, their championship dreams could once again collapse before they ever truly begin.
