Blue Jays Eye Alex Bregman as Key Offseason Target Amid Fierce Free-Agent Market

The Toronto Blue Jays are making waves this offseason, and their latest potential move could shake up the MLB free-agent market: reports indicate that the team is actively pursuing third baseman Alex Bregman. Sources briefed on the situation say the Blue Jays have been in contact with Bregman’s agent, Scott Boras, exploring the possibility of adding the former Astros star to their roster.

The Athletic’s Mitch Bannon described Bregman as a “potential backup plan” if the Jays fail to land right fielder Kyle Tucker or infielder Bo Bichette. While Toronto ideally wants to bring in a left-handed hitter, both Bregman and Bichette — right-handed batters — would provide a better fit defensively than Tucker or Cody Bellinger, two lefties who could disrupt the club’s lineup balance.

If signed, Bregman would likely stay at third base, with Ernie Clement manning second and Addison Barger patrolling right field. George Springer and Anthony Santander would also see time in the outfield while occasionally serving as designated hitters. Should the Jays opt for Bichette instead, who played second for the first time in the World Series, Clement would simply remain at third, keeping the defensive puzzle largely intact.

Age is another factor separating the two players. Bichette, turning 28 this March, is four years younger than Bregman. Analysts at The Athletic project Bichette could command eight years and $212 million, whereas Bregman’s price tag might land around six years, $171 million. Both, however, represent premium options for a team that came agonizingly close to winning the 2025 World Series.

The competition for both players is fierce. Bregman is drawing interest not only from Toronto but also from his former team, the Boston Red Sox, as well as the Chicago Cubs, Arizona Diamondbacks, and other clubs. Bichette is similarly coveted, targeted by many of the same teams.

One key element that could tip the scales in Bregman’s favor is his leadership. Alongside his offensive and defensive abilities, Bregman is known for elevating the play of those around him. Comparisons have been drawn to Kyle Schwarber, who recently re-signed with the Philadelphia Phillies for five years, $150 million. Players of Bregman’s caliber are considered difference-makers both on and off the field, bringing intangibles that go beyond batting average or fielding percentage.

The fit with Toronto could be particularly strong. Two of Bregman’s former Astros teammates, George Springer and Myles Straw, are influential voices in the Jays’ clubhouse, which is widely regarded as one of MLB’s most cohesive. Integrating Bregman into a familiar social structure could help him hit the ground running and further bolster team chemistry.

Toronto has already been aggressive this offseason, signing right-handed starters Dylan Cease and Cody Ponce, along with reliever Tyler Rogers, for a combined $277 million. Shane Bieber, who exercised his $16 million player option, is set to return, giving the Jays a formidable starting rotation. But with several key players — including Bieber, Springer, Kevin Gausman, and center fielder Daulton Varsho — set to hit free agency after 2026, Toronto is looking to strategically invest now while retaining payroll flexibility for the future.

All signs point to the Jays adding a major free-agent bat this offseason, and Alex Bregman has emerged as a realistic, high-impact option. With his proven track record, leadership qualities, and potential clubhouse fit, Bregman could be the linchpin to push Toronto over the final hurdle and finally claim their elusive championship.

For a team that came within two outs of the World Series crown, landing a player of Bregman’s caliber could be the difference between near-miss heartbreak and ultimate triumph. But in a crowded free-agent market, Toronto will need to act decisively — and fast — before other contenders move to secure the third baseman who could change the trajectory of their season.
